Reaching Families Cut Off by Floodwaters in Nepal

Three weeks after the floods, many of Nepal’s hardest-hit communities are still cut off from road access. Almost 1,400 people have been confirmed dead, and more than 5,000 are still reported missing. Bridges that once connected a single, intact community are gone, and the river now divides daily life, forcing people to cross in makeshift cable car systems. 

Our teams are on the ground supporting displaced families, providing supplies for the respectful care of the deceased, and distributing generators and power equipment. We’re also helping communities clean and disinfect homes and schools to prevent disease, mold, and contamination, and building shower facilities so families can hold onto some sense of dignity and stability in the middle of all this.

Schools have become a particular focus. We’re providing students with learning kits, early childhood development learning toys, educational games, slippers, and other essentials to help them get back to some version of normal. A secondary school that had been serving as a relocation center for displaced families needed help returning to its original purpose, so our team deep-cleaned and disinfected nine classrooms, moved desks, and scrubbed floors so the school can reopen as soon as possible. In Nuwakot, we’re also building a secure fence around a school along the riverbank to keep students safe and away from unstable ground near the water. It’s a small change with a real impact: a safer space to learn, and one less thing for children already carrying so much to worry about. By supporting both students and teachers, we’re helping create the continuity that lets kids keep learning, playing, and moving forward, even in the hardest circumstances.

As communities move from emergency response toward recovery, we will continue addressing their most urgent needs and helping them rebuild safely. Over the next two years, we aim to raise $5 million to rebuild 20 schools in communities that need them most, building on our years of work in Nepal and helping create safer, stronger places for children and families to rebuild their lives.
