Ukraine Crisis Relief

Program Start: March 2022

We starting responding to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine starting in March 2022, working in Poland and Western Ukraine to support refugees and internally displaced persons. Today, we continue to support through our Invincibility Train Cars initiative, in partnership with Ukrainian Railways, World Central Kitchen, White Stork, and Hachiko Foundation.

Disaster Profile

It has been over four years since Russia brutally invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Today, over 6 million Ukrainians have fled the country, and millions more remain internally displaced. Families around the country continue to endure missile attacks, the loss of friends and family members, destroyed infrastructure, and extended periods without consistent heat, electricity, or water.

Our Response

What began with emergency evacuations has transformed into long-term, adaptive humanitarian work, from refugee shelters in Poland to IDP dormitories in western Ukraine, to warming tents and mobile hubs in Kyiv.

When the invasion of Ukraine began, we deployed to Poland to help evacuate families from active conflict zones. Operating from Jarosław and Kraków, we partnered with Ukrainian relief and anti-human trafficking organizations, including Save Ukraine, to support safe evacuations for the most vulnerable: orphans, people with disabilities, the elderly, and survivors of violence.

Through May 2024, we supported more than 75,000 people displaced by the war in Poland. Our volunteers rehabilitated shelters and community centers while providing psychosocial support through art sessions and English clubs, creating spaces where families could gather and begin rebuilding their lives.

We continued our response in Western Ukraine through August 2024, partnering with Uzhhorod University to renovate dormitories and apartments for internally displaced families. Alongside infrastructure repairs, we delivered more than 250 English club sessions to strengthen community connection and resilience.

In winter 2025–2026, as attacks on energy infrastructure deepened the crisis, we expanded our response with “Invincibility Train Cars”, retrofitted rail cars from Ukrainian Railways transformed into mobile warming hubs. These heated, connected spaces allow families to warm up, charge devices, access information, and find relief from the physical and psychological strain of winter.

Today, these train cars represent the evolution of our work, which combines infrastructure, mobility, and psychosocial support into one adaptable solution for communities enduring prolonged crisis.
