Two powerful earthquakes struck Mexico in September 2017, causing widespread destruction across 5,000 schools in the country.
On September 7, 2017, one of the most destructive earthquakes in Mexico’s history hit close to the southern state of Chiapas with a devastating magnitude of 8.2. Just 12 days later and a few hundred miles away, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocked central Mexico, toppling buildings, breaking gas mains, knocking out electricity and sparking fires across the city and other towns in central Mexico. Damage was widespread throughout the central and southern parts of the country.

Students, teachers and community members impacted in Santa Ana Necoxtla
We’ve been rebuilding disaster-resilient schools in Mexico since 2018. By rebuilding disaster-resilient schools, we’re helping students return to safe, stable learning environments for the first time since their schools were damaged or destroyed. In April 2025, we launched our tenth program in the country, supporting the Santa Ana Necoxtla community in Puebla with the construction of safe, inclusive classrooms and dormitories designed to withstand future disasters and continue learning, regardless of what lies ahead.
