Severe Infrastructure Damage and Power Loss in Guam From Typhoon Mawar

Super Typhoon Mawar formed in the Pacific Ocean and passed over the northern tip of the U.S. territory of Guam as a Category 4 storm on May 24, 2023. The island endured 15 hours of heavy rain, lightning, storm surge and powerful winds up to 150mph. Typhoon Mawara caused substantial damage to infrastructure and knocked down trees and powerlines, causing 98% of Guam to lose power during the storm and, ultimately, $112M in damages.

Our Response

San Diego Volunteers Mobilizing Relief Supplies for Families in Guam

This unique relief program was operated from San Diego, California, where we worked alongside organizations with direct lines of communication with residents of Guam. Leveraging our dedicated network of alumni, five San Diego-based alum joined our efforts to provide typhoon survivors in Guam with essential supplies to support their recovery. Our team worked with the House of Chamorros and Sons and Daughters of Guam, representing over 20,000 Chamorros (indigenous people of Guam) in the San Diego area. With these partners, we helped to identify lists of critical supplies needed, collect donations and sort and prepare these supplies to be shipped and distributed to individuals impacted by the typhoon on Guam.
