Children in the Philippines Are Back to School, Built By You

Across the world, 273 million children are out of school, a devastating number that has risen for the seventh consecutive year. In disaster-affected areas, 1 in 3 children may not have the opportunity to return to class. This Back-to-School season, we’re working to change that. Right now, your gift can go twice as far. When disaster strikes, the most immediate needs are often clear: food, shelter, clean water, and healthcare. While these needs are crucial, another critical need can easily be overlooked: education.

In some disaster-affected communities, children may spend months or even years learning in unsafe or unsuitable conditions. In other cases, schools may never reopen at all. Without access to education, children can lose important opportunities to learn, develop, and build a brighter future. Prolonged school closures can also increase children’s vulnerability to child labor and trafficking, particularly in rural communities already facing economic hardship after a disaster.

That’s why getting children safely back to school is such an important part of disaster recovery.

Rebuilding Schools Impacted by Disaster

Since 2007, All Hands & Hearts has worked alongside communities in the Philippines, one of the world’s most typhoon-prone countries, rebuilding schools damaged by severe storms and extreme weather. In 2024 alone, Typhoon Pepito destroyed more than 400 schools across the country. Salvacion Elementary is one of those schools.

Together with the community and our partners, HHf Czech and Home Credit, All Hands & Hearts rebuilt disaster-resilient classrooms, clean bathrooms, a water filtration system, and safe play areas.

We don’t just build walls; we empower entire communities through disaster preparedness, WASH training, and female mason programs to ensure these schools stay safe for generations. With 385 schools rebuilt worldwide, we know this model works. But we need your help to reach the next community.
