Building Functional Temporary Shelters in Venezuela After the Earthquakes

In response to Venezuela’s recent earthquakes, AH&H is helping displaced families build more functional temporary homes in El Campito. By constructing elevated shelter platforms and setting up water filtration systems, teams are transforming basic emergency tents into safer, drier, and more dignified living spaces.

On June 24, 2026, back-to-back earthquakes struck northern Venezuela. In moments, thousands of families across the region were displaced, forced to leave damaged homes behind for temporary tents and makeshift shelters.

When a tent becomes a temporary home, the ground underneath it matters. Rain, uneven terrain and standing water can quickly make a shelter difficult to use. Raising the tent above the ground creates separation from moisture and helps make the space more functional for the people living inside.

At El Campito in Venezuela, All Hands & Hearts has been building elevated bases for temporary shelters while also improving access to water through filtration systems. Together, the projects address two of the most basic parts of daily life after displacement: somewhere more protected to sleep and water that families can use.

As the earthquake response in Venezuela moves beyond its earliest phase, our work is increasingly focused on these types of improvements: taking the emergency resources already in place and helping communities make them safer and more functional.
