Indonesia Earthquake Relief – Lombok

August 2018 – October 2018

AHAH responded to a series of earthquakes in Lombok, Indonesia, by distributing food, deconstructing unsafe buildings, clearing debris and building temporary structures such as homes, community infrastructure and latrines.

Disaster Profile

Communities Struggling After the 2018 Lombok Earthquake

On August 5, 2018, a powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake rocked the Indonesian island of Lombok. This was the strongest of three earthquakes to hit the island within two weeks.

It was estimated that nearly 500,000 people were displaced with more than 90,000 homes damaged. In some villages, not a single building was spared, including homes, schools, hospitals, and religious facilities. The inland villages were both the hardest hit and the most difficult to reach.

Our Response

Providing Food and Shelter While Clearing Debris and Unsafe Buildings

The All Hands and Hearts assessment team designed a program with our local partners which involved first listening to the local community to fully understand their needs. It was determined that the program would need to include: distributing food, deconstructing unsafe buildings, clearing debris, and building temporary structures such as homes, community infrastructure, and latrines.

A house with cracked and crumbling walls, showing exposed interior rooms and heavy structural damage.
A partially destroyed concrete building with the front wall collapsed, rubble scattered across the ground.
A small house with bamboo walls and a collapsed interior wall, exposing damage and debris from the Indonesia earthquake.
