Vermont Flood Relief
July 2024 – August 2024
Last updated: September 2024
AHAH responded to a catastrophic summer flooding event in Vermont in July 2024, which was the second consecutive year this type of disaster impacted the region. The team performed immediate muck and guts and mold sanitations, while distributing dehumidifiers, fans and water-removing pumps to support immediate recovery for homeowners. AHAH supported the area last year through our Northeast Flood Relief program, and we committed to returning to Vermont to once again work alongside its resilient residents to provide immediate cleanup assistance.
Our Work
Prioritizing those most in need, we assisted homeowners in St. Johnsbury, Lyndonville, Barnet and Island Pond by removing mud, silt and water-damaged materials while sanitizing homes to prevent mold growth. We worked closely with local partners like NorthEast Kingdom Organizing (NEKO) and Barre Up to address the needs of homeowners and complete unfinished work left by other groups’ previous efforts. They also circulated dehumidifiers and water-removing pumps to homeowners to begin drying out homes. The team remained adaptable, shifting focus from mold sanitation to mucking and gutting homes as needed based on changing community needs over this rapid response period.
Disaster Profile
Just weeks after flash flooding from the tail end of Hurricane Beryl left two dead and forced over 100 evacuations and rescues, Vermont faced even more devastation from a second storm, dumping eight inches of rain as it further damaged and destroyed homes. This disaster follows another record-breaking storm one year ago, on July 10, 2023, that flooded and destroyed homes and businesses across the state.
