Florida Flood Relief
June 2024
Last updated: June 2024
On June 12, 2024, Broward County experienced heavy rainfall from a tropical storm, causing massive flooding in the region. Our team, mobilized from the Florida Hurricane Ian Relief Program, was able to arrive before the end of the storm on June 13, to muck and gut mobile homes and distribute fans, dehumidifiers and hygiene kits to community members to support ongoing resilience.
Our Work
The Hurricane Ian team, already on the ground at our base in Fort Myers, was able to pivot both people and physical resources to support communities facing flooding impacts from the storm.
Our initial response focused on mucking and gutting mobile homes, and concluded with a distribution of fans, dehumidifiers and hygiene kits to community members in partnership with Lasko and the WASH Foundation. We successfully completed work in 1.5 weeks, supporting ongoing resilience and creating lasting impacts against future storms in South Florida.
Disaster Profile
In mid June 2024, a powerful tropical storm struck southern Florida, causing severe flooding with over 20 inches of rain. Some areas received more rain in 24 hours than during Hurricane Ian, a Category 5 Atlantic hurricane that struck Florida in 2022. A state of emergency was declared in five counties, particularly affecting Broward and Miami-Dade. Communities were faced with waist-deep water, stranded vehicles and flooded homes throughout the affected area. The Red Cross reported 815 homes with flood-related damage.
