California Hurricane Hilary Relief
August 2023 – September 2023
The week of August 20, 2023, Southern California experienced extreme rainfall and strong winds as Hurricane Hilary crossed overhead. Our Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) had boots on the ground by August 24 to assess the damage and engage volunteers to conduct critical home repairs.
Our Work
All Hands and Hearts remotely monitored the movement and impacts of Hurricane Hilary as it made landfall in Central America and traveled up the west coast of the continent. After remotely assessing the needs of impacted communities, we activated our DART to communities in Riverside County, California to conduct on-the-ground assessments.
A partnership with Team Rubicon was identified and together, we supported three homes needing critical repairs. These houses were sitting in a foot or more of mud, causing significant damage to the flooring and walls. Our team helped to perform four-foot muck and guts, which consisted of shoveling mud and pulling out damaged home belongings, furniture, flooring, drywall and insulation.
Disaster Profile
Hurricane Hilary formed over the Pacific Ocean and traveled up the west coast of Central America as a Category 4 storm with 145 mph winds. As it landed in the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico on August 20, 2023, it weakened into a tropical storm, bringing record-breaking rainfall and strong winds as it crossed into Southern California. These elements caused almost 60,000 power outages and significant flooding.
