REASON TWO: WHY VOLUNTEER WITH ALL HANDS AND HEARTS
IT’S A TRANSFORMATIONAL EXPERIENCE
february 6, 2023
At the beginning of this year, we shared how volunteering with All Hands and Hearts (AHAH) in 2023 can help you enact positive change.
What if you could achieve this while also creating positive change for yourself?
In the second of our “Why Volunteer with All Hands and Hearts” series, we share how a volunteer experience with AHAH can not only help you make a positive impact in the world but also help you learn and grow.
YOU’LL BE EMBARKING ON A TRANSFORMATIONAL EXPERIENCE
From opportunities to grow as a person, to creating meaningful connections and learning new skills, disaster relief volunteer work can positively impact your life as well as those impacted by disaster. Volunteers often tell us they have a sense of getting back more than they gave after joining us.
Hear from Rob, a volunteer in Texas, on his transformational experience with All Hands and Hearts.
BUILD STRONG CONNECTIONS
On an AHAH program, you are living and working with others from all walks of life, but you are tied together by a common purpose. United by a shared desire to enact positive change, this thread helps to make meaningful connections for life.
When volunteering abroad, you’ll naturally participate in a cultural exchange. Many of our programs in Central or South America and Asia offer opportunities to take part in language exchange lessons with local community members and our teams are often invited to local cultural celebrations.
LEARN NEW SKILLS
Working as part of a close-knit team will not only help develop your team working skills but there are many hard and soft skills to be made as a disaster-relief volunteer. You will develop situational awareness and hone your communication skills to work effectively with your teammates and to respond sensitively with survivors of disasters.
Depending on the type of work being carried out, you’ll receive training in various aspects of disaster response and construction. You’ll learn how to use a range of hand and power tools and on many programs, there are opportunities to develop your leadership and problem-solving skills as a Team Leader.
CHALLENGE YOURSELF
Your time with us as a disaster-relief volunteer may push you outside your comfort zone. Leaving your usual routine to immerse yourself in a new community can be daunting. You might also be intimidated by the construction aspects of our work; however, many of our most seasoned volunteers tell us they’d never picked up a hammer or a screwdriver before joining us on their first program.
While we can’t guarantee you won’t find it a challenge, with our support, we can guarantee it will be a unique experience that hopefully encourages your personal growth.
Don’t just take our word for it, hear from our volunteers.
What are you waiting for? No matter if you have one day or one month to spare, join us on one of our global programs and build new skills, invaluable connections and memories to last a lifetime.
